Something new is taking shape. =CONNECT is a mutual credit community being established for people who want to exchange value in a fairer, more flexible way, and we are looking for founding members and stewards to help build it from the ground up.
=CONNECT works online across borders and locally in communities. It is designed to support real people doing real things, not investors chasing a return. Right now, at this early stage, your involvement could help shape what it becomes.
How It Works
=CONNECT is a mutual credit system. Units are not minted in advance, not pre-loaded into anyone’s account, and not for sale. They are created in the moment of exchange between members, and they settle back toward zero as exchanges balance out.
A simple example:
• You help a fellow member with an afternoon of work, agreed at 50 =CONNECT.
• Your balance moves to +50. Their balance moves to -50.
• Later, they contribute something of their own, and the cycle continues.
No one needs to “have” anything before they can participate. The act of contributing is what creates the credit. The system is built on what you can offer, not on what you already own.
What Members Can Exchange
Members list what they are willing to contribute and what they hope to receive. In the online circle that spans borders, this might include mentoring, language practice, editing, creative collaboration, and knowledge-sharing across time zones.
In local circles, =CONNECT tends to flow around:
• Food, produce, and preserves
• Repairs, crafts, and practical help
• Workshops and classes
• Room hire and local events
• Community volunteering
• Transport help, garden work, and small favours
Many listings are also open to a part-=CONNECT, part-cash mix, so members are never forced into an all-or-nothing choice.
Why It’s Different From Ordinary Money
=CONNECT units are not money, not an investment, and not redeemable for cash. They sit alongside ordinary currencies, filling the gaps that cash-based markets often miss: socially valuable work, local skills, and cross-community cooperation that might otherwise go unrecognised and unrewarded.
The system is also deliberately non-speculative. Members cannot hoard =CONNECT units, trade them for a return, or treat them as an asset class. Rules on limits, dormant balances, and concentration will all encourage active participation over passive accumulation.
Think of it less as a wallet and more as a ledger of contributions. Healthy balances are balances that move.
A Note on Value, and a Word on Tax
=CONNECT units are not pegged to any national currency. Members agree the value of an exchange between themselves, often in rough time terms, such as “an afternoon of help” or “a day of focused work.” This keeps the system anchored in human effort rather than market speculation.
A brief word on tax, which is less romantic than community but matters anyway. =CONNECT is not a tax shelter, and no one involved would ever claim otherwise. If members receive goods or services through =CONNECT in the course of a business, trade, or profession, they remain responsible for their own tax affairs in their own country. Purely social exchange between members, the neighbourly kind, is generally treated as hobby activity in Australia, Norway, and the United States, and does not usually create a tax event. Professional services usually do, regardless of what gets used to pay for them. Members with questions should speak to a local tax advisor, and general guidance is available on request from the Stewardship Committee.
We Need Founding Members and Stewards
Because =CONNECT is being established now, this is a rare chance to get involved at the foundation stage.
As a founding member, you help establish the trading culture, build the early network, and show what is possible when people exchange value on their own terms.
As a steward, you play a more active role in governance. =CONNECT is overseen by a member stewardship committee, not a single founder or administrator. The committee will review the health of the system, oversee fairness, and report back to members. Local circles in Norway and Pennsylvania will have their own input too.
We are looking for people with good judgment, a commitment to fairness, and a genuine interest in community exchange. Financial expertise and corporate management credentials are welcome but not required, and certainly not what makes a good steward.
Get Involved
Whether you are an individual with skills to share, a local organisation looking to strengthen your community, or someone who wants to help govern a fairer exchange system, =CONNECT is being built for you, and with you.
Express your interest today and help us get =CONNECT off the ground at connectassociation.blog.
